code 602 serves the central portion of the city of Phoenix, Arizona. In
the original numbering plan that was adopted in 1947, all of the state of
Arizona was assigned the area code 602.
Due to the population growth of the city of Phoenix and the emergence of
electronic devices, area code 602 was split. Area code 602 was retained as the
code for the entire city of Phoenix and its suburbs and on March 19, 1995 the
rest of the state was assigned area code 520.
With continued growth of the Phoenix area,
area code 602 was again split on April 1, 1999, adding area codes 480 and 623 to
serve the fringe areas of Phoenix and its surrounding suburbs.
